True PCI Express

The RADEON X600 PRO video processor was designed to have a native 16 lane support, or “true” PCI Express interface.

As a result it can communicate directly with the PCI Express bus at PCI Express speeds.

Other graphics companies have cards that are compatible with PCI Express, but they are still only AGP cards that are “bridged” by a second chip to be physically compatible with PCI Express slots on the motherboard.

This architecture can only work at AGP speeds, and is more vulnerable to failure, performance bottlenecks and incompatibility with software applications.

Key Benefits

Better reliability

There are fewer failure points with native one-chip ATI PCI Express due to the smaller number of physical connections, which lowers the time delay between when data is requested and when it is delivered. This also translates into more robust error correction and recovery than bridged PCI Express.

Better power management

The serial bus with the reduced pin structure of the ATI native PCI Express architecture reduces the number of signals required, supporting lower power consumption and PCI Express's lowpower idle states.

More cost efficient

Unlike the bridged chip, the native one-chip design of new ATI PCI Express graphics processors will be brought on stream without significant incremental system cost.

Benefits: The RADEON X600 PRO sets the new bar for PCI Express Performance with a powerful combination of the industry’s fastest true PCI Express architecture and fastest rendering pipelines.

Advantages: Offers full bandwidth for bidirectional traffic that bridge solutions cannot offer. Will mean the upcoming HDTV applications from companies such as Pinnacle will require true PCI Express hardware.

2D Acceleration Features

The industry’s fastest 2D acceleration engine includes a refined suite of 2D hardware optimizations to improve the Microsoft Windows experience.

Optimized handling of fonts / text using ATI proprietary techniques.

Game acceleration with support for Microsoft DirectDraw: Double Buffering, Virtual Sprites, Transparent Blit, and Masked Blit.

Support for WIN XP GDI extensions and direct support of WIN 2000 & WIN XP alpha cursor standard.

Benefit: Accelerates everyday Windows applications

Advantages: Combined with a 400MHz RAMDAC means users will have the best quality display along with blazingly fast 2D output.

Video Acceleration Features

The RADEON X600 PRO possesses the best video acceleration features in its class for home theater, multimedia, and internet applications used by millions each day. Industry leading technologies include:

MPEG-4 simple profile hardware acceleration

WMV9 decoding assist

Supports top quality DVD / DTV / HDTV decode with low CPU usage.

Enhanced MPEG-2 hardware encode/decode acceleration:

Adaptive de-interlacing filter eliminates video artifacts caused by displaying interlaced video on noninterlaced displays, by analyzing image and using optimal de-interlacing function on a per-pixel basis.

Built in support to accelerate the most popular movie formats

Benefit: Transforms a regular computer into a multimedia powerhouse while reducing extra costs associated with additional hardware decoders

Advantages: Unrivaled multimedia support that is several generations ahead of any other graphics board vendor.

Image Quality Features

High Quality Texture Filtering

The RADEON X600 PRO uses an adaptive filtering method that provides up to full 100% trilinear filtering to remove the banding effect that appears between adjacent mip map levels, unlike the competition which at best can use enhanced bilinear filtering.

Bilinear filtering is computationally cheap but as a result, it is low quality. By approximating the gaps between textures by sampling the color of the four closest (above, below, left and right) texels, it produces noticeable drops in quality. ATI’s filtering determines the optimal amount of pixels to produce smoother transitions between mip map levels which results in the best possible gaming experience for users.

16x Adaptive Anisotropic Filtering. This feature improves the clarity of textures, far beyond the blurry and undersampled textures rendered by competitor solutions. By adaptively determining the number of samples used, the RADEON X600 PRO provides the highest quality image.

High Quality 6x Gamma Corrected Anti-Aliasing. While other solutions produce images that look jagged, the RADEON X600 PRO implements proper gamma correction to ensure that images are sharp but smooth Up to

Benefits: Games and applications look much better on the RADEON X600 PRO. Combine this with the fastest performance in its price segment; the RADEON X600 PRO is the VPU users want.

Advantages: The RADEON X600 PRO produces the industry’s highest image quality at full cinematic performance.

12x Effective Anti-Aliasing. With its highly programmable architecture, the RADEON X600 PRO can support Temporal AA patterns to simulate MSAA patterns never before imagined with NO performance penalties.

ATI Silicon Tuner

When observing the ALL-IN-WONDER X600 PRO graphics board before installation, notice that the board isn’t overcrowded with a bulky metallic tuner can. Instead you’ll find a gold plated tuner can with a silicon chip underneath. The chip looks and is similar in size to the one shown below. Thanks to the new ATI Silicon tuner, big, oversized tuners of the past are no longer necessary.

The ALL-IN-WONDER X600 PRO utilizes a new silicon tuner with to implement total RF functionality.

The tuner features a 48 MHz to 860 MHz input range, requires minimal external components, and contains no manually tunable parts. It not only receives and tunes the RF signal, but also enhances it for distribution through the rest of the video decoding process.

The tuner features low phase noise, low noise figure, high linearity and approximately 1½ watts of power consumption.

The use of the new silicon tuner has many benefits over other tuner implementations. Most importantly the chip offers quality advantages, power savings, and space savings. Another benefit of using fewer parts is lower power usage.

Today’s graphics cards demand an ever increasing amount of power, therefore saving power wherever possible is essential to the future of the power hungry, high performance cards.

Today’s graphics cards are demanding more and more space on the PCB since faster processors require more parts, therefore space savings is very important to future generations of multimedia video cards.

With the addition of this new technology, the ALL-IN-WONDER X600 PRO contains many features which weren’t previously available due to the restricting size of older tuners. Both VGA and DVI connectors are available on the bracket of the card, which was not previously possible.

These benefits are not purely for the manufacturer of the video card, but also to the end user. The video quality is crystal clear and the tuner is very quick to respond to channel changes. Combined with the THEATER 200 video decoder, the ALL-IN-WONDER X600 PRO offers a highly integrated, high performance and high quality solution to all TV-on-PC needs.

New Input/Output Dongles

All new with the ALL-IN-WONDER X600 PRO are the next generation of input/output cables offered by ATI.

The new cables were designed to improve the overall ease of use for the customer. All of the input/output connections of the ALL-IN-WONDER X600 PRO are handled through only one connection on the card bracket.

This connection leads to four other soft wire connections rather than hard connections on the bracket: two for the easily accessible RF connectors designed to connect your cable/antenna signal and FM radio antenna, one for the input dongle, and one for the output dongle.

The audio connections on the new output dongle are optional. The green pass-through connector enables system sounds to be sent to the ALL-IN-WONDER output cable -- useful when outputting edited video to a camcorder or VCR. The blue connection to the system sound card’s line input is also optional for use with legacy applications that don’t yet utilize the digital audio pathway. The orange SPDIF connector enables Dolby™ digital audio when connected to your home theater amplifier or other surround sound decoders.

The input/output dongles can be set up in a “domino style” as pictured below. This unique design allows the user to configure the dongles in various ways. The new dongles are more aesthetically pleasing than previous versions, and offer all of the traditional inputs and outputs plus more, including an analog audio output. Additionally, the cables are designed to be long enough to reduce the user’s concern about crawling underneath their desk each time to connect a new device to their ALL-IN-WONDER card. There is also an optional YPrPb output cable available separately.

THEATER 200

At the heart of the ALL-IN-WONDER X600 PRO lies ATI’s THEATER 200 video decoder. This chip has proven itself as the industry leader in video decoding quality and has been present in ATI multimedia products since it made its first splash with the ALL-IN-WONDER RADEON 9700 Pro. With that said, it is only natural that the ALL-IN-WONDER X600 PRO also harness the power the THEATER 200 holds.

THEATER 200 is responsible for receiving analog video signals and transforming them into digital ITU- 656 compliant digital video data. The chip is also the stereo decoder, and it captures sound IF or composite audio, performs audio demodulation and stereo decoding and outputs the audio via the I2S or VIP interface.

THEATER 200 is packaged in a 100-pin LQFP has a lower then average power consumption of only .86 watts, and features a wide selection of inputs and outputs. The chip can be setup to use 5 composite or 5 s-video inputs. Once the signal is received from either the TV tuner or other device connected through the composite or s-video inputs, it is passed through an analog to digital converter. The signal is then sent through the video decoder which houses the comb filter.

THEATER 200 utilizes a 2D-3 line comb filter which is used to separate the color information and brightness information of the signal (except for when an s-video input is used). These two signals make up what is known as a Y/C signal or luminance and chrominance, also known as s-video. From this point, the Y/C signal is passed into the video scaler which adjusts the size or zoom rate of the video to be displayed on the screen.

The video scaler is an important feature of the chip because if not properly implemented, many artifacts and blockiness will be introduced into the video. After the video is scaled it is changed into a digital format recognized by the video card, then displayed on your monitor or other viewing device. What makes

THEATER 200 better than competing solutions is a combination of the chip features and the integration with the ALL-IN-WONDER X600 PRO. The 2D 3-line comb filter is the best in the market in terms of color separation and speed. The dual 12 bit analog-to-digital converters (ADC’s) assure that the digital signal replicates the analog to the highest degree possible. Through years of experience implementing

THEATER 200, ATI engineers have learned how to utilize the chip to its fullest potential, resulting in benefits such as a lower-than-average power consumption of only 0.858W. This results in the chip running cooler, faster and ensures the highest quality video output.

Through years of development and successful implementations, the THEATER 200 has become the video decoder of choice for watching TV on the PC, and the ALL-IN-WONDER X600 PRO provides another example of the power THEATER 200 holds.
