Spyro The Dragon

Mario, eat your heart out!

In the game you are Spyro, a cute little purple dragon. You are very cute and you do walk and talk very much like a kid. Your quest is to save you kingdom from evil forces that are turning all your dragon buddies into crystal.

Spyro is a spunky little guy and he has a few tricks to help him on his quest.  He can fly (for short distances), jump, breath fire and ram things with his head.  He is also easy to control and that makes the game fun to play.  Did I mention the entire game is in some of the nicest 3D graphics yet seen on the PSX?

In your quest you will encounter many foes, including many types of frogs, sheep and a a  host of other original baddies.  All the character animation is very good.  Nothing is done half way here.  Even the most underused enemies have a charm and the animation shows it.

The voice acting for the games creatures is also top notch.  People who make those "interactive movie" games could learn a thing or two from the Spyro people.

The levels are very large and do offer a lot to explore.  The level design is on par (if not better) than all 3D platforms on the PSX and other systems.

Death from above. Look out, its a little cute dragon! Ahhhh!!!

Nice worlds, not so nice bad guys

The gameplay is easy at first and will get people used to Spyro's control method.  After that, the levels become a little bit harder and more challenging.

The game never gets too hard and takes you up the levels very gradually.  Spyro is a showcase for classic learning curve playing.  Never too hard that people walk away but never too easy that they get bored.

The game does have some nice twists with a few sub quests and some tricky options.

Any downsides?  None really.  Even the music is non intrusive although it can be turned off.  Getting used to Spyro's moves is a little tricky at first but nothing that anyone could overcome in a 20 min of play time.  Some of the locations are hard to find and not easy to get too but they are never impossible to find.  At times the world can be confusing but only if you don't look at what your doing.

Spyro has been pushed by Sony on TV and with good reason, with over 30 worlds, nice character animations and a little dragon that is hard to not like.  Bravo Sony!
