Lode Runner comes back but now in 3D !

In 1983, a new very original game for the computer had just appeared and all signs pointed to a raving success: Lode Runner.

Recently, Infogrames, the publisher, and Big-bang Software, the developer, made the continuation of this game on the N64 console but in a 3D version this time. In fact, this game is actually in 2˝D because one cannot move freely in the universe of this game as you could with Mario 64 or Zelda 64.

The story is a very simple one: Lode Runner, armed with his good old laser rifle, must penetrate the kingdom of the emperor Monk, the enemy of the original game, who stole a cargo of gold. Arriving in his kingdom, Lode Runner must recover the stolen gold, kill the Monk emperor if he finds the chance and get back to Earth alive. You will have to navigate through 5 different worlds and collect parts of the navigation cards of each world to be able to advance in the game.

This game is a platform type of game. You must collect all the gold of the level in order to proceed to the next one while avoiding the enemies whom you can bury by destroying the blocks of the floor with your gun. The music and the sound effects come to accompany the whole to create a kind of futuristic environment. This game includes 126 levels, not counting the bonus ones. These levels require good reflexes and you must be able to react quickly and effectively.

Hey, where's the exit??

As you can see, technology also affects old classics :)

The levels of this game are very repetitive. Some people will get bored rather quickly since the levels are very similar. Control is kind of difficult since the game is played in an environment in 2˝D. It is very limited and the movements are restricted. I would have liked to see a multiplayer mode and also to be able to change the level of difficulty, that would have largely raised the lifespan of the game. One of the greatest innovations between this game and the original is the addition of 3D graphics even if they are not extraordinary.

The system of camera is very useful to see the entire level and to easily locate the gold and the enemies that are scattered all over but once that you begin the level, you do not really have any more time to use this system because the game proceeds very quickly. The difficulty of the levels increases gradually as you advance in the game. Fortunately, it is very easy to obtain additional lives which decreases the level of difficulty a little.

Finally, this game is for those who like puzzles and like to think. It is a good continuation of the original Lode Runner but some might find it a little difficult and too repetitive. Lode Runner is nevertheless worth playing.
