Madden 99 makes it mark on the Nintendo 64

Madden has been around for a long time now and each version gets better and better.  The Nintendo 64 version of Madden 99 is not any different. Football is a game of inches and this game has that feel perfectly.

Once again I found myself baffled by all the options in Madden 99.  Having played the PC version I was surprised to see how much of it had made it into the Nintendo 64 version.  Not being a true blue fan of the sport I can only say the amount of detail is staggering.  From all the big name players to all the big teams.  Even the stadiums have the look of the real ones.

Although the interface is up their with the best of them the amount of playback options is (to me, the humble non-football fan) a bit much.

Even friends of mine who play the game and watch it with religious conviction were baffled by some of the plays.  This is by no means a downside but can but a little bit of a deterrent to the casual fan like me.Luckily they have a stupid mode that lets the novice play.

Quaterback ready to throw a pass

Is that legal?

One button mode helps younger players and the football challenged get into the game easy.  It allows the game's AI to take over most of the plays and lets you just play.  A nice touch that helps make the game just plain FUN to play.  Arcade mode is also fun with less rules and more BIG action so the arcade happy will like the game as well.

The players look great and move realistically.  The action has the look & feel of the real game and will impress even the hard-core football fan.  The detail is quite impressive for a console game.  Players are not all the same cardboard cut out and they actually have a different look to each of them.

All the other options you expect for EA sports are here like creating your own players, Franchise mode, a play editor to create your own plays and about a billion ways to edit your own teams for some interesting games.

As of today this is the best football game on the Nintendo 64, period.
