Interview with Butch Freedhoff at the E3 in Los Angeles

At the Electronic Entertainment Expo in Los Angeles, the Playstation Booth was the biggest and most impressive one . In the middle of the booth it had an elevator that went up to the top -three stories high- where they was a restaurant. I was treated to juice and blueberry croissants before starting my interview with Butch Freedhoff the General Manager of Playstation of Canada. Mr. Freehoff give me an overview of where Playstation is at now and what we can look forward to this year from Playstation.

 

LD - How is Playstation Doing this year so far ?

Butch- As of today there has been 54 million Playstations sold around the world, 19 million in North America. So that means that 1 out of 6 households owns a Playstation now. And so far this year our sales have reached $1 billion, up 18% in the first quarter in 1999 compared to 1998.

LD -How many games do you have so far ?

- We have presently over 600 games out right now in all different genres.

LD - How many games will you have out this year?

Butch - This year we will have about 100 games coming out and and hundreds more next year. So by the time the Playstation 2 arrives, 800 hundred games will be out.

LD - How many first and third parties games will you have made this year?

Butch - We will have 31 first party games and about 60 third party ones made this year.

LD - Which titles are looking promising for Playstation this year?

Butch - Our promising games will be this year: Um Jammer Lammy, Ape Escape, Gran Turismo 2, CTR: Crash Team Racing, Final Fantasy 8 and of course Spyro 2.

LD - Which games did you sell the most in 1998?

Butch - Our best games were Gran Turismo, Spyro, Crash Bandicoot: Warped, Twisted Metal 3, NFL Gameday 99.

LD - Which game is your best seller?

Butch - Gran Turismo is our best game so far with sales of over 2 million in less then one year.

LD - So Sony is doing pretty well with Playstation then?

Butch - Yes, the Playstation is the best selling product for Sony, with more than 29 games that have sold a million copies each.
