Have you ever flown a hang-glider?

If you're looking for an original and unique flying game, Hangsim is the one for you. Created by Ilan Papini, an Israeli aeronautical engineer that has been flying Hang-gliders and light air planes for more than 5 years, and saw the lack of light flyer simulations on the market so began to work on his own.

That is why he was asked to join the team of Wilco Publishing as their lead programmer to develop Hangsim. Wilco Publishing are known for the add-ons of Airport 2000 and Grand Canyon for the Microsoft Flight simulator.

In Hangsim you will be able to flight 3 hang-gliders; the Storm, the Seagull and the Sensor. 2 paragliders; the Eagle and the Spider. A glider called the Hawk and a ultralight called the Thunder.

Do not worry if you are not familiar with all these names, in the included book they are all explained, what each does, with their specifications and how best to fly it. All of these aircraft can be flown with your mouse or your joystick.

As a rule the hang-gliders and the paragliders are not equipped with flight instrument because they are flown by the pilot's impressions. But it is helpful to know some specific parameters sometimes in order to fly successfully so often pilots will bring portable charts and GPS (Global Positioning System) with them. So for this reason you have the option of flying with or without the instruments. Again all of the terms are very well explained.

You even have a map so you can look at it before or during your flight experience to know where you are going to fly or where you are now.

Since the weather needs to always be taken in consideration when flying, it is vital in light flying aircrafts that certain meteorological factors like the wind and the turbulence be understood so they explain that for you as well.

Not only are flying these aircraft fun and exciting, but the scenery they have chosen is quite spectacular. You have seven 3D flight areas. In France; the French alps, the Chamonix resort for mountain flying, the volcanic region of Puys, the Massif Central, and the Gorges of Verdon. In California; the Torrey Pines, the northern part of Del Mar city, the southern part of San Diego, and the suburbs of Los Angeles.

Cruising over the City

Fly your hang-glider the Storm over the ocean

These places were designed based on actual aerial photographs that can reach terrain resolution of 3 meters per pixel. And you can view it from a frame rate of 640x480 to 1280x1024 in 32 bit color. You have the option to change the wind, the clouds and the time of your flight so you can fly under the moon or experience the view of an amazing sunset view.

4 game modes are available: Free flight mode, where you can decide which aircrafts you want and fly right away; Challenge mode gives you some lessons on how to fly, like practice turning your hang-glider or simply trying different scenarios already in place like flying down to your home for lunch with your glider; the Competition mode will allow you to compete with other pilots in different scenarios where you earn points depending on your flight achievements; the Just for Fun flight mode gives you the ability to shoot down other pilots to help you win the race or simply bring down as many as you can.

Overall Hangsim contains 70 scenarios with 3 levels of difficulty, 11 competitions, 32 challenges, 8 free flights and 4 fun flights. All are unique but you can also create your own if you wish to. After each of your flights your logbook will automatically record your performance so you keep track of your progress.

Some features are missing though. In this game you do not have a multiplayer mode and you cannot save your game whenever you want too. And the instruments on the gliders are not working, instead you have the same instruments that are used on the others. This does not prevent you from flying, it just looks odd that they are not working. Also the competition mode could be improved and the controls are good but can be tricky sometimes.

However the breathtaking scenery is magnificent and a nice relaxing sound track where you can hear the wind and the oceans when you are flying over them make up for it fast. When you fly you have multiple point of view that can be adjusted, such as seeing yourself flying from far away or seeing your aircraft or not.

Since the 1970's the popularity of light flight has been growing and for the first time you can experience it on your computer. Hangsim will bring you many hours of relaxing flying and is definitely a game that you want to add in your game collection if you are a flying fan.
