SONY COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT AMERICAPLAYSTATION 2 ONLINE FACT SHEET

Overview As the undisputed industry leader, Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. is committed to making PlayStation®2 a mass-market entertainment platform in the home. As part of the company’s vision to introduce consumers to expanded forms of computer entertainment, the company introduced the Network Adaptor (Ethernet/modem) (for PlayStation®2) in August 2002, making online console gaming a reality.

With unprecedented consumer response to online gaming, more than 500,000 Network Adaptors, the gateway to the online arena, were sold through to consumers in the first six months. Underscoring the company’s leadership position, the massive PlayStation 2 online community grew to become the largest online console gaming community to date. Driven by continued, high demand, the company is revving up its commitment to producing stellar online titles from first and third party developers.

How It Works For Consumers

Consumers with an in-home Internet Service Provider (ISP) account and the Network Adaptor can play friends and rivals across the Internet via PlayStation 2 games specifically designed to take advantage of this capability. The Network Adaptor accommodates both broadband and analog connectivity, so consumers can enjoy online gameplay on their PlayStation 2 regardless of their connectivity preference. The Network Adaptor comes with a bundled Start-Up Disc to ensure consumers can quickly and easily equip their PlayStation 2 with Internet connectivity. Currently, 42 percent of PlayStation 2 online users connect via dial-up and 58 percent connect via broadband.

How It Works For Developers

In keeping with the open environment of the Internet, Sony Computer Entertainment America encourages the creative community to drive and determine content offerings that enable online console gaming that is flexible for consumers, as it features both broadband and analog capabilities. As part of this open environment, developers decide the business and pricing model of online games. Currently, more than 15 companies are developing online enabled titles for PlayStation 2.
