Video Gaming Attorney Steve Smith Named a Daily Journal “20 Under 40”

Entertainment Counselor is Top Scorer with Wins in Industry Defining Disputes and Deals

LOS ANGELES--Greenberg Glusker partner Steve Smith, 39, was recognized by the Los Angeles Daily Journal in its publication “20 Under 40,” profiling outstanding young California attorneys. Smith, an entertainment litigator, was lauded for his many triumphs representing the interactive gaming industry. Several of Smith’s recent cases were noted for their industry-wide impact including:

  • Securing a $13 million award for Ubisoft Entertainment, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, in a contentious “Bratz” license dispute against MGA Entertainment.

  • Prosecuting a $10 million copyright infringement claim against Optical Experts Manufacturing (OEM) involving pre-release leaks of the popular game “Assassin’s Creed.”

  • Closing one of the most significant video game deals, Ubisoft’s acquisition of rights to use bestselling author Tom Clancy's name and likeness.

“We are pleased that Steve has been recognized for his outstanding work within one of the entertainment industry’s hottest areas,” said Greenberg Glusker’s Managing Partner Norman H. Levine. “His understanding of the industry and the competitive environment helps make the Firm a leader in this evolving area of entertainment law.”

An honors graduate of University of Texas School of Law, Smith is a frequent commentator and author on aspects of interactive gaming. He has handled high-profile litigation and multinational acquisitions for entertainment clients of all types both inside and outside of the interactive gaming industry.

“It’s an honor to receive the recognition of the legal community relatively early in my career, especially for work I am passionate about doing,” said Smith. He believes his youth, coupled with over 15 years of experience as a lawyer, and a devotion to gaming are distinct advantages when representing next-generation developers and other leaders of the videogame industry.
